Do you ever truly wonder what’s available to do in Southern West Virginia? Well, the truth is, there’s a lot. Every season there are different things to do whether you like the indoors or outdoors. As long as you have a car and a full tank gas, you will be able to find these places. West Virginia is one the most beautiful places on the East Coast. There is an activity for everyone in West Virginia for year-round fun.
Spring is when everything starts to turn green from it dying during fall. Bears starts to wake up from hibernation. Spring is perfect weather for being outdoors. Maybe you can go on a picnic with your loved ones or closest friends at Grandview. Grandview is one of the national parks in the United States. There are a lot of activities to do while you’re there, like playing volleyball or baseball, going on hikes, or seeing the beautiful view of The New River National River. If you don’t feel like going outside, there are cafes to visit here, ones including indoor or outdoor adventure. One particular place is The Chocolate Moose Café. The Chocolate Moose Café is at 1818 Harper Rd, Beckley, WV. It’s not just a regular café; it features an indoor rock climbing wall. There is an 18-hole miniature golf course, with every hole West Virginia-themed. The café has one of the best ice creams; Kelsey recommends the Cappuccino Crunch. But, there are many more places to visit…
Summer is many people’s favorite season. The Mountain State is full of great things to do in the summer, like go on hikes, have sleepovers, or pull an all-nighter with your friends. Even better is to go outside and absorb the 85° temperature. There are a lot of places to go for swimming and other water activities. Ace Adventure is one of these locations, where there’s even a floating water park. If you want to go fast, you can always rent a boat or use your own boat at Summersville Lake. There is a lot of space to drive your boats around Summersville Lake. You can take out your jet ski and take it out for a spin, or some people attach an innertube on the jet ski and pull people while they’re floating. One of many things you can do here in West Virginia is go camping. Pack your things like sleeping bags, stuff for your s’mores, tents, and go to one of these campgrounds: Babcock State Park, BlueStone State Park, Adventures on the Gorge. There are many more campgrounds you can find, because the Mountain Mama is all about the nature.
Another season people enjoy so much is fall, for different (all good) reasons. The bright, vibrant colors on our Sugar Maple Trees only enhance the creepy Halloween vibes! If you’re into the spooky stuff, then West Virginia is your thing. One of our most famous attractions in West Virginia is the Trans Allegheny Lunatic Asylum. It’s said to be one of the most haunted places in America. A creepy fact about this place is it’s 666 acres and it has 13 stories. Not really into that stuff and want something more kid friendly? There are great attractions for little kids, like the Pumpkin House! The title does not lie — it’s a house with pumpkins, located in Kenova and worth the drive. For Halloween, you can also walk around our many safe neighborhoods and after that enjoy our state most popular food, pepperoni rolls!
All aboard! Welcome to winter season, the season with many fun things to do. There is the Polar Express in Elkins, which is a 3-hour drive from Beckley but is where you can wear your pajamas and have the hot, hot chocolate, yum (just like in the movie)! And at the very end, you can visit Santa and Mrs.Claus! Since this event almost always sells out, get your tickets early! Or visit one of our most famous ski resorts in W.Va., Snowshoe Resort. There, you can learn how to ski and participate in other types of snow sports. There are also many great dining options at the resort. Just don’t forget to put on a jacket, stay warm, and have fun!
Now that you know places to go, will you actually leave your phone alone and go outside? Explore the wondrous place of our state West Virginia! So pack up your stuff and have a road trip around our state.
