For centuries, people have enjoyed the dulcet sound of music. Different eras and areas are known for their unique type of music. Some are so knowledgable that they can identify where music is from, just based on the different instruments and sounds. Music has been an important part of many lives. Some people even worshiped music and musicians, but why is music important? Perhaps it’s a form of discipline or a form of self expression.

The importance of music is more than just the nice sounds that comes from it, the meaning comes from the lyrics. According to Beckley-Stratton band and choir teacher, Mrs. Bickford,

“Music makes you feel like apart of something and that you belong.” ”

— Mrs. Bickford, BSMS Choir and Band Director

What is it that makes you feel that way though? It’s most likely because modern day music is relatable. When you sympathize with something that someone else is going through, it makes you feel a sense of belonging. Another reason music is important is because “it combines logical things with creative things, and makes it a full brain process,” as said by Beckley-Stratton music teacher, Mr. Miller. The creative things he was speaking of could just mean a general creation of music or it could mean self expression.

Self expression has played a huge part in people lives for years, but especially in schools. Why is that so? Well Mrs. Bickford believes it may be because “the music fits their mood or the circumstance around them, or the lyrics speak to them in a way that makes them feel comfortable.” Mr. Miller mentioned that music “has a way of bringing people together to not only be individuals, but be a community.” While music is important and a great way of expression, can it actually help at all?

People have always said that music makes them happier, but no one has ever said why it makes them feel so. Mr. Miller expresses his thoughts, “music therapy is a huge deal for a reason and people are proven to have an emotional connection to music.” So he thinks music may have a positive impact on others. Mrs. Bickford also says that “music has proven to make better students which can lead to a happier life.” Music has been proven to have a good impact on people simply because they relate to it and it helps them out of dark areas.

We all like different kinds of music but use it in the same ways. Whether you like country, pop, rap, or even dubstep, you use music to express yourself and make you happier. Music is all around us, and we have to love it. As said by Stephen Sondheim, “If I cannot fly, let me sing.”
