Looking back on “Vampire”, a local production of Beckley Dance Theatre and a tradition for our area in October, many dancers and others worked hard to bring this terrifying story to life on stage. The story takes place in 1999 and tells how Dracula was born. Director of the Vampire Ballet, Alyssa Young, stated, “Dancers have been rehearsing since August and have put so much dedication into this performance.”

2018’s show was held October 20 at Woodrow Wilson High School. Audience members were encouraged to wear their terrifying Halloween costumes, so the show atmosphere was spooky from the start.

This was my first year as a dancer in the Vampire production. I experienced many challenges while practicing and rehearsing including late nights at the studio. In one jazz dance, we had to wait an hour, motionless, in a tiny room with a bunch of other dancers to wait our turn and to crawl out in front of the audience and frightfully up onto the stage. What might have been scarier than the actual show was the feedback from instructors during rehearsal. Everything had to be perfect to deliver a diabolical performance. Backstage was chaotic. There were lost pieces of costumes, and even a few little accidents, but the dancers tried their best to hide the imperfections from the audience. It’s difficult to have a show without a costume ripping or accessories missing. Part of being a dancer is learning to adapt and think quickly to resolve a problem. As they say, the show must go on!

All in all, being a part of Vampire was a great experience. Dancers made new friends along the way and being a part of it helped us grow closer. Each year, there is always something new and unexpected added to the show, so if you didn’t catch it this year, make plans to attend next year!
