Another election season has come and gone, and with it a new host of politicians join the old ones. With this I imagine that many people don’t know who won the elections or what they do. Adults and students should be more informed about politicians and what they stand for since these will be the individuals setting the rules that shape our nation. Detailed here are the results of the major elections in West Virginia.

Let’s start with the biggest and most publicized election, the Senate election. The two people who ran for Senate were the infamous Patrick Morrisey and Joe Manchin. Joe Manchin was a returning Democrat Senator who has held office since 2010 while his opponent, Patrick Morrisey was West Virginia’s Attorney General and is a part of the Republican party. Manchin has also earned a reputation for being the most neutral in terms of party politics. In the end, Manchin won with 49.5% of the vote compared to Morrisey’s 46.3% of the vote. In all, over 580,000 people voted in the Senate Elections.

Next up is West Virginia’s First Congressional District. The two major candidates running for the position of being a Representative of WV were Republican David McKinley and Democrat Kendra Fershee. The winner of this election was McKinley with 64.6% of the vote.

Now let’s move on to the Second Congressional District elections. Major candidates here were Republic Alex Mooney and Democrat Talley Sergent. Republican Alex Mooney won this election with 54% of the vote. Another Republican win for the House.

Finally we have the Third Congressional District. The two major candidates here were Republican Carol Miller and Democrat Richard Ojeda. The trend of Republican wins continues here with Republican Carol Miller wining this election with a respectable 56.4% of the vote. Now for an interesting tidbit of information, Mr. Ojeda was recently confirmed by WVVA for a running in the upcoming 2020 presidential elections, one of many individual democratic candidates who are expected to throw their hats in the ring.

West Virginia once again remains a predominantly Republican state, which has been the case since the George W. Bush election. On a more national level, the Senate now sees a Republican majority while the House of Representatives sees a Democrat majority.

Getting elected is the first step. Considering approval ratings for those in office on a national level, Vermont Senator Bernie Sanders remains at the top of approval ratings with a 63%, which is higher than Trump’s 52.8% approval rating, even though this isn’t comparing apples to apples. Currently the Senator with the lowest approval rating is Kentucky Senator Mitch McConell, who has a 56% approval rating. These results are definitely interesting, especially with all the growing controversies such as the incoming Migrant Caravan, the ever-present Global Warming issue, and so many other things. Of course, these issues, compounded with an ever-changing society, seems to be increasing the divide between right and left. In the end, no matter what party you belong to, these results are still impacting.
