As technology continues to rapidly advance, we must continuously learn in order to progress with it. Proper STEM education, however, requires the utilization of a multitude of complex tools and materials, many of which are immensely exorbitant. Luckily for the students at Beckley-Stratton, Mr. Charles Lilly, Beckley-Stratton’s Explore Tech-Ed teacher, Mr. Patrick Robrecht, formerly BEST’s Computer Skills teacher, Ms. Crystal Bishop of West Virginia University and NASA SEMAA have diligently researched and executed the writing of a Beckley Area Foundation Grant. It pledges to promote school-wide STEM success through the donation of nearly $6,800 worth of innovative kits. The integration of STEM in the classroom by us of the various technologies deeps the critical thinking skills of all students involved in projects.

The Makey Makey Kit, for instance, introduces robotic circuitry and electricity to students, while the Dremel 3D printer allows students to experiment with their own creativity. Through the use of these technologies, BEST students will be exposed to several problem-solving situations, and will be tasked with carrying out investigations that will be both useful in a future profession and entertaining in the classroom. Ultimately, as Jerry Blumengarten once stated “tech gives the quietest student a voice,” and by implementing STEM knowledge into the classroom, every student at BEST will be granted an opportunity to showcase their talents.
