The eighth grade students at Beckley-Stratton Middle School took a trip to Grandview State Park in mid-September. In both Mrs. Brown and Mrs. Blankenship’s science class the students learned about watersheds which made a trip to Grandview State Park the perfect way to get s hands-on experience in correlation with our science text book.

While at Grandview, students participated in many activities to gain further understanding about the geography and history of our local parks. Park rangers had different stations set up for the students.

Students learned ways to conserve water, used a dichotomous key to identify macro-invertebrates, hiked the trails to learn about the gorge, and tested the quality of water from local creeks that flow into the New River. Andrew McKinney, eighth grade student, stated, “the trip to Grandview was fun and it was great learning about our surroundings.”

The trip to Grandview State Park is an annual learning opportunity that upcoming students can look forward to. They, too, will get a hands-on learning opportunity at the direction of state park rangers. It is important to stop and view the world around us; this is what helps us to better understand how we can make an impact on the environment that we live in even here in Beckley, West Virginia.
