Makeup has been one of the things that has became more popular throughout the years and has made a big impact on many teenage girls lives. I feel as though wearing makeup gives girls more confidence and helps girls with their self-esteem. Self-esteem is a big issue with teenage girls. At times, some girls feel like they aren’t “pretty enough” or “don’t fit in.” I think makeup builds their self-esteem and makes them feel better about themselves.

I started to wear makeup in the 6th grade. My parents would only allow me to wear makeup that was subtle and natural. In my opinion, 6th grade is a good time to start wearing makeup or start experimenting with it for teenage girls. I have always loved makeup and get excited about putting it on, but it’s always good to take a break from it for a day or two; it allows your skin to have time to breathe and be natural.

8th grader Brianna Weis says she started to wear makeup in 6th grade as well. “I wear makeup because it makes me feel good about myself and I like to try new looks.” She also thinks “6th grade is a mature age to wear it (makeup).”

Even though makeup can have many benefits to it, there can also be some downfalls with it as well. Makeup can make you look way more mature and older than you actually are. Which is why a lot of parents do not like the idea of their teenage daughter wearing it; but, there could be a way to compromise with your parents about wearing makeup.

Doing very natural makeup looks, like mascara and a subtle eyeshadow could help them get away from the idea of “painting” your face. The natural look is appropriate for this age. You can look at it as enhancing your natural features, instead of “painting” your face. Wearing dark makeup is definitely not the way to go if you’re trying to compromise with your parents. Give them a break, they think you are beautiful without applying foundation, eyeshadow, or eyeliner.
