On March 3rd, the West Virginia State Spelling Bee took place at Capital High School in Charleston. Each of the students that were at the state spelling bee were winners from each of the 55 counties of West Virginia, and are top of their grade level. Delaney Mitchell and Mark Imbing surely made Beckley-Stratton proud by bringing home the first and second place trophy.

Delaney Mitchell, 8th grader, expressed that it was “a dream come true” for her to place first and that this had been a goal of hers since she had competed as a runner up in last year’s regional spelling bee. She will represent the state of West Virginia in May, in Washington, D.C.

Runner up, Mark Imbing, 6th grader, says he prayed that he would get first place, but that he’s proud of Delaney. Imbing hopes that he’ll be able to take home the 1st place trophy one day. He will represent as West Virginia’s runner up in the spelling bee in Washington D.C.

Delaney and Mark studied for the spelling bee by looking up random words out of the dictionary and looking at spelling scripts given to them by school. Delaney’s prize included an all-expense paid, week-long trip to the nation’s capital, a $2,500 check for a SMART529 college savings, and she received a one-year membership to Britannica Online Premium.

They definitely had to work up to where they stand at the moment. It’s proof that hard work and dedication truly do pay off in the end. They both still continue to study and do their best as nationals’ approaches. BEST of luck to you both!
