On December 11, 2017 The BEST Times newspaper staff took a field trip to the WVVA headquarters in Bluefield, WV. While touring the building, staffers were granted the opportunity to explore the control room and recording studio while learning about all of the hard work and teamwork that goes into broadcasting a successful show.

In the control room, members observed the magic behind the media; the man controlling the initial presentation of the show, such as the cameras, green screen and anchor’s script. Subsequently, in the studio, aspiring journalists were given the opportunity to interact one-on-one with a TelePrompTer, green screen, and two of the channel’s leading ladies, meteorologist Katherine Thompson and news anchor Melinda Zosh.

Both anchors passionately advised the staff to aim towards achieving a double major in college and to network themselves, assured them that humor and honesty go quite a long way while on air. As Melinda expressed, “if you just leave an audience wondering, like if they just hear a huge crash and you stop talking, what are they going to think?

At the end of the day, reporters sat back and watched the show live in awe, receiving a glimpse of what might be their future career. Collectively, this experience impacted each young writer immensely, and certainly emphasized the importance of being a voice for those who are unable to speak. The BEST press could not feel more appreciative for what they have gleaned from this exceptional encounter, and it is evident that this escapade will be remembered when ruminating on a career in journalism in the future.
