Have you ever heard the saying, “Spring Forward-Fall Back?” This saying refers to Daylight Saving Time. On Sunday, November 5th at 2 a.m. we lose one hour of daylight.

Benjamin Franklin had the idea for DST in the late 1700’s, but never actually introduced it. The idea was first advocated by London builder William Willet in the pamphlet, ‘Waste of Daylight’ (webexhibits).

Germany was the first to adopt the idea of DST. Britain quickly followed and instituted it in 1916, to help conserve candle usage by people waking up and utilizing natural sunlight earlier in the day. Soon thereafter, the United States, Canada, and several parts of Europe enacted Daylight Saving.

“During the Second World War, a different form of daylight time was reinstated by Britain and clocks were set two hours ahead of Greenwich Mean Time during the summer. It was known as Double Summer Time” (cbc.ca).

In 1966, the U.S Congress made the Uniform Time Act, which established a daylight time (in each time zone) throughout most of the U.S, exempting states that legislatures voted to keep on standard time. Daylight Saving Time saves energy, electricity is used less, and it helps us to better use the daylight we have.
